Burger Avenue, Taft

Burger Avenue opened its doors in De La Salle University last August 8, 2015 and it’s such an honor for me to be invited by Aldous to meet the owners and to try their food. Burger Avenue has its first branch in Fort Strip, making the branch in DLSU to be their second.

Miss Kim and Sir Martin, the owners, told us their bestsellers. However, I’m really up to try something different like Wasabi Burger.Burger Avenue (2)

To be honest, I am not totally a fan of wasabi; I rarely try it to my sushi so taking this order is really a challenge. The Wasabi Burger regular is P95 while the ¼ pound is P 145. The soft bun is especially topped with oats, while the patty is juicy and generous. Consuming wasabi in large scale would have you a mint sensation running to your nose up to your head. If appropriate, I should call it “brain freeze” or much better, minted brain. LOL! Despite the trial I had, I must say that their burger is delicious and supreme.Burger Avenue (6)

I had Strawberry Milkshake which is surprisingly in the mason jar! I also like the fact that their shake is not too sweet but still flavorful. There are no berry tidbits, though.Burger Avenue (4)

Meanwhile we also had our Crazy Fries P 90 and it is spicy because of the topped chili con carne. Their onion rings P 55 are unexpectedly big! It’s crunchy but a little oily so I prefer and like their Crazy Fries as the side dish.

Burger Avenue also offer rice meal called All Day Breakfast Bowls. Shiela tried their bestseller Chodobo, a love team of chorizo and adobo. It comes with super garlic fried rice and sunny side up fried egg. The egg is also beyond normal, do you agree?Burger Avenue (5)

Burger Avenue is very pocket-friendly, yet the quality of the burger is not compromised. The place in DLSU branch could be small but the confidence of the restaurant is regained because of the good ambience. I hope that they would consider putting up a branch in Quezon City, too.

The Sweet Ecstasy of Cubao Expo

I thought that ecstasy means losing control of one’s self. So, I thought that the place I’d be going to is somewhere dark and neon. I thought that I would be intoxicated with trance music or be “on the other side” as Red Hot Chili Peppers puts it. However, setting foot on the Sweet Ecstasy is the exact opposite. The wall is a combination of white and red, plus the vintage paintings hung on the wall are almost too distracting for diners. Those paintings scream ‘look at me’, indeed.  Then, I suddenly realized that the resto uses the adjective ‘sweet’ in its name. Go figure!

Sweet Ecstasy is made with love, literally, as it is owned by the lovely couple Monica Tobias and Al Galang. The establishment is the brainchild of Mr. Al. Once he learned the basics of cooking, he became obsessed with creating different recipes. Here’s a short list of the dishes we tried:

Onion Rings
I like their Onion Rings and the dip that came with it. Unluckily, I forgot the name of this wonderful dip. I will update this as soon as I can.

The Soy Honey Wings is the one at the topmost of our table. Unfortunately, I was not able to taste it. However, it’s one of their best sellers, which is a mean feat considering that they only introduced the dish about a week ago.

What I love most is their Buffalo wings (or maybe it’s just because I really like spicy dishes). Honey BBQ is also good. On the other hand, I wasn’t able to taste any choco or cola in their Choco Cola variant. Nevertheless, this one’s sweet, so those who like it sugary will like this.  Overall, their wings are neither oily nor skinny. In fact, we felt full immediately!

I can say that their burgers are competitive in the market, which is quite a feat since there are tons of burger restaurants in and outside the metro. They have Cheeseburger with Caramelized Onions, Cheeseburger, and The Double. I cannot entirely tell the differences among them, except which ingredients make the one different from the others. The vegetables are fresh and the buns are not saggy. The locally-supplied patty is delicious and juicy.

Here’s an interesting story behind the burgers: Monica was pregnant when Al was still on the trial and error stage of creating the right burger recipe. You could say that this burger is like their son, too. Well, it surely us a product of love!

Among the three, I’d pick the Ecstasy Fries any day. It has caramelized onion, cheese, and ecstasy sauce. Munching these fries is ecstasy—pun intended. Although Kamote (sweet potato) is sweet, I still find these fries satisfying when paired with a burger. This one comes with a honey dip and it is definitely a must-try. Meanwhile, the Fantastic Fries tasted normal to me. I’m not saying that it’s not good, I’m just saying it’s okay. Generally, their fries are hand-cut and stout. Plus, the crunch remains even after awhile.

These are their shakes. We ordered different kinds for photo purposes. Some ordered Adult Shakes which has alcohol in it, but I chose to be demure that night. Actually, since Valentines Day started, I’d glug alcohol every Friday what with all the events I attended. So, I find it the perfect time to lay low on booze. I chose their Nutella Oreo Premium Shake (yes, it is alcohol-free). It is one of their best sellers. However, it looks just like their Cookie Oreo.

Moreover, if you are from Makati or somewhere near the South area, a new branch of Sweet Ecstasy will open in Jupiter Street by the end of March. Diego Castillo of Sandwich is their partner in this new branch. Since Monica is a former DJ of RX 93.1, I’m guessing that is how they became good friends. Okay, enough with the theories. So, what are you waiting for? “Sugod mga kapatid!” to their soon-to-open Makati branch!

Cheesy Bacon Mushroom Champ Presents Thor

My mom dad, and I frequently feel lazy to cook dinner when it is a Sunday, so every time that I leave at night to attend the mass, I would order take-out. Yeah, right! We don’t go to church together, because I always wake up late. For dinner, I ended up wanting to pair the spaghetti—given to us by our dear neighbor who celebrated his birthday—with Jollibee’s Champ burger.

Honestly, I have tasted a ton of burgers. I have tried the very affordable Angel’s Burger, Minute Burger, and McDonald’s Burger, as well as the pricier offerings of Brother’s Burger, Brgr Project, Army Navy, and Stackers Burger Café. It’s quite a long list, but I really can’t remember the others. Anyway, it is too shameful to admit that I haven’t tasted Champ in my entire life. Finally, I had the chance to try one.

I made a beeline for the counter and looked at the menu while waiting. I saw a new offer called Cheesy Bacon Mushroom Champ and was encouraged to try it, because I love bacon! Who doesn’t? I guess Champ and I will have to meet another time.

This new offering is in line with the much-awaited sequel to the first Thor movie, Thor 2: The Dark World, which will be in theaters on October 30, 2013. The promo started last October 16 and will run until November 16, 2013. Avail it a la carte for P129.00 or get the Value Meal which is priced at P165.00.

On my way home, I was thinking about the hearty helping of bacon strips, cheese sauce, and mushrooms on top of the burger patty. My eyes shimmered with delight since it has been a long time since I last ate a burger. I’ve been masticating chicken and sisig a lot lately, and it’s not healthy. I felt really satisfied with the Cheesy Bacon Mushroom Champ, because it’s so tasty, and the serving is rather generous.

I added P95.00 to get this cute Thor Hammer Mjolnir which actually encases a 1 GB flashdrive. It’s a great collector’s item, isn’t it? Also, the hammer is so lightweight. Maybe I’m now as strong as Thor!
