Abuela’s, Makati

The rainy season has started and everyone wants to stay and get cozy in their own homes. While the rain is continuously pouring outside, imagine getting up from the bed and your mother or your wife has the food ready for you. This certainly feels home, but what if you are far from it and yet you want to get cosseted like you’re home? From the busy city of Makati, a restaurant in Legaspi Village named Abuela’s can feed your soul and tummy a comfort of home.

Abuela in Spanish is “grandmother” so the restaurant is straightforward to where their dishes come from, but since it has passed from generations to generations, the food has come with a modern twist.

Appetizer

This is not your ordinary Chicken Wings, since it is a Spanish style buffalo wings served with chorizo and olives. The taste is leaning on the salty side.

The Kilawin has a subtle touch of tangy because it has done the Negros way plus topped with coconut milk.

To definitely wow your appetizer, here is Bone Marrow with Truffled Chimichurri and  Onion Mango Jam. The exciting part of eating the dish is when you’re scraping the roasted bone marrow with truffled chimichurri, topping it off at the humble toasted bread and adding the mango jam with it. It is a new taste in your palate. Highly recommended!

Entrees

The Mechado stuffed with Iberico Chorizo looks good to take a photo because of the towering dried squid ink. Yes, that piece of art is edible! The dish has foie gras, and Iberico, a ham produced in Spain and Portugal so this dish must be pretty special.

The Jojo’s Filipino Curry Prawns with Crab Fat Sauce is enticing to look with the grilled prawns with a Southern Filipino crab fat curry. This one has a buttery taste.

The Pinangat is a fish meat and crab meat wrapped in gabi leaves. Drowned in coconut milk sauce, and a little salty, the right word for this dish is overindulgent of cholesterol.

The perfect slice of the pork is simply irresistible. Their Bagnet is not oily and the crunchiness does not hurt or test your jaw. The meat is good itself and it was the best when dipped with the Thai sauce.

Dessert

Their dessert is still on its plating game. The Molten Lava Cake and the Green Tea Cheesecake are also scene-stealer. Both of them are decadent, well-flavored and rich but the Molten Lava Cake is moister.

Verdict

Located on the second floor of Somerset, Abuela’s might be missed when you are strolling along Legaspi Village. The restaurant is spacious, it has a dim light with an elegant strike of home. If you are looking for a venue for corporate events, they can cater since they have function room with a maximum capacity of 25pax, minimum consumable of P20,000.

The price is not that budget-friendly but how the food is presented was the evidence with the price range of Abuela’s. The waitstaff are accommodating yet informal. The taste of the food is overall good. Hence, the modern twist is the interesting thing that you will keep to come back.

Carmelo’s Wagyu Steak, Greenbelt, Makati

Melo’s is a famous Angus steak restaurant in Quezon City and Muntinlupa that is run by Carmelo Santiago. After a long while, his daughter, Cristina Santiago Rivera, put up a restaurant also named after her father which we now call Carmelo’s Wagyu Steak.

Carmelo’s Wagyu Steak can be found on the ground floor of Greenbelt 5 in the array of restaurants with al fresco dining area. Getting in, the ambiance is high-class. It’s the kind of place where probably the guy will take you to impress. My officemates and I began talking about it whether we wanted that scenario for the first date with someone new but the thought sort of scared us in a way. Aren’t we weird, are we?

Truthfully speaking, we were here because of the voucher we had in Metrodeal. The inclusions are the following:

6 oz US Angus Steak, soft rolls, soup or salad, and dessert for P799 instead of P1428

Our order took a while but we did not mind waiting since there’s a bread basket served. The waiter politely asked us if we like Caesar salad or creamy organic fresh mushroom and rich pumpkin soup. The soup was praised by my colleagues so they asked me to try it. It was indeed creamy and flavorful. Meanwhile, my salad, is well, a salad.

The Angus steak came. It was pale but the criss-cross grill marks is a sight to delight. The sides were a julienne of carrots, string beans, and garlic mashed potato. The waiter also gave us a gravy on the side. The slab of beef looked dry but upon slicing, it is where the juices came out. We were savoring each and every bite because it’s not every day we would have steak for dinner. Even if it was just a 6 oz of meat, we were already full.

We were not reading what we have availed in Metrodeal so after finishing our steak, we thought we were done but here comes the dessert! Chocolate cake, oooh I love it. Trivia fact: The owner is a pastry chef so such a treat!

Verdict!

The restaurant can accommodate only a few, 20-30 pax, I guess. As mentioned earlier, the ambiance has a soft lighting and pleasing music. The price, I may say, is expensive… I would not be dining in here if it weren’t for the voucher we availed. The serving was enough to fill our hungry tummy, it was not easy to finish since it feels heavy! The waiter was attentive and kind. He even gave us a lot of gravy that I told him, “Kuya, KFC? Unli gravy?” We were thinking of giving him an extra cookie but there was no bill jacket given to us since the bill is already settled. Lastly, as for the taste, I’m not an expert with regards to steak but the three of us getting satisfied, I can say we really had a good dinner.

Buffet 101, Glorietta

To be honest, I have dined-in to buffet a quite few but never blogs about it not unless it’s sponsored by the restaurant. The selection of food shocks me, then there comes the bewilderment of the food to choose. The next thing I know I’m in food coma and I can’t move because my tummy is so full. Now, I decided to try writing about buffet to get used to it. Please spare me this very informal blog with how my dining in Buffet 101 went.

The cuisine that Buffet 101 serves are mostly lined with Asian cuisines – Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and the local Philippine dishes. However, in wherever buffet restaurant I got to try, the roasted beef never comes off the list. See that chunk of meat on my plate below? There it’s there!

Also, if you love shrimps, Buffet 101 has tons of dishes with it. (or maybe it was just the time when we dined-in). I happen not to have photos of shrimps in the chafing dish because it was already empty!

The dessert has a wide array of selections and it was heavenly good! At the back of my mind I was thinking if this was their specialty.

Lastly, what I like about Buffet 101 is the herbal tea they offer. It’s not in the tea bags but the real deal, love it. Ang lakas maka-TEAtas of Manila! See the picture below what certain herbal leaves can do to your wellness.

VERDICT!
Apparently, if we were to compare the food that Buffet 101 offers to Vikings, we know who would have won. Buffet 101 caters to class B & class C diners so we could not expect more but it’s good. My officemates and I ate at Dad’s, also a buffet restaurant, a few months ago but we all agreed that the food quality and so the selections are much better there than here. As for the ambiance, Buffet 101 has good interior and it’s roomy. It is well ventilated and their powder room is also classy! The waitstaff courteously cleared our table and attended to our needs as much as they can. The commis also served me with undivided attention.
