Sanhoyan, Taipei

To be honest, my friends are more foodie than I do. I was having this realization that whenever I’m with friends, I tend to eat more. Truthfully speaking, our whole itinerary in Taipei were arranged by my friends and I was just tagging along wherever we go.

One of the restaurants in Taipei that are best reviewed is Sanhoyan. From Shilin Night Market to Shifen Old Street, we took the next level of foodie adventure by dining in at a casual fine dining restaurant.

The Sanhoyan Fried Rice with Egg ($327) is a show stopper. It was served to us in a pyramid shape. It is moist and delectable and so is their bestseller.

Sanhoyan Fried Green Beans $227 (on the left) is a dish with a twist. It is fried with a distinct appetizing flavor. It was a bit dry but we really did not care as we were looking to balance our meal with a vegetable dish.

Stir Fried Prawn Balls with Salty Duck Egg Yolk $327 has a subtle but addicting taste. It is crunchy and the surprising soft bite completes the meal.

The Spicy Deep Fried Chicken $287 is freshly fried until crispy and so are the vegetables that come with it. It’s tasty and we liked it. Most of the veggies are chilis.sanhoyan (1)-1024x1000

Look at how cute these buns are! Here are the sesame bun (black and white), sweet green bean, and the last, salty duck egg yolk & sweet milky bun (gold) won our heart.

Sanhoyan is located on the lower ground floor of a building. The ambiance is sophisticated in a modern way. It is pricier than the normal food we have eaten during our stay in Taipei so we prepared ourselves to spend more money dining in here. As for the serving, it was good enough for us three. The waitstaff can comprehend English but not quite. Nonetheless, they have given us good service that they accommodated us very well. Sanhoyan is a Taiwanese fusion cuisine so it’s really good that we were able to try it. I can tell that it has become one of the best ratings because of the food presentation.

Diary of Ximen Hotel

My friends and I booked a 2D 1N for our stay in Diary of Ximen Hotel since we were initially planning to roam around in Taipei by the time we arrived by midnight, 3 AM, and check in at 2 PM. However, we were very sleepy from the flight so our friend sponsored us and availed another day for our stay in Diary of Ximen Hotel to rest well and cancel the plan of hanging around in the city by midnight.

Diary of Ximen is a hotel that is walking distance to Ximending, a shopping hub of Taiwan. Meaning… restaurants are near, vendors are few steps away, everything we need is within reach. The hotel is accessible that we can take a bus or a train. The hotel is near the Ximen MRT Station.

Note: The cons will be colored orange since cons are not quite many.

I am not sure with how much my friend was charged, all I know is we were able to book a 2D 1N PHP 3,100+ / TWD 1,700+ for a room good for four. It’s a 3-star hotel so we could not expect for an extravagant lobby and it was okay. The lobby is located on the twelfth floor which is quite confusing at first. The front office though was not smiling but speaks fluent English.

Our room is on the ninth floor (if my memory serves me right) and another front office with simpler aesthetic welcomed us. From there, we can have free water, free coffee.

The room is not cramped but it’s not spacious, either. There is no window. There is a just a right room for the pieces of luggage, shoes, etc. What I have noticed is we don’t have a cabinet, just a hook to hang some of our clothes. The aircon and the lights are functioning well and so is the TV. There is also a safety box for your important things to keep and a mini refrigerator.

Of course, what matters the most is the bed. It’s a two queen size bed and the linens are clean. The towels are also neat plus some toiletries are placed on the desk of the TV.

When we arrived from our tour, we liked that our bed is arranged again. Housekeeping did their work well. During the day, we noticed that we can hear the people from the other side of the room so we minimized our music player a bit.

As for the washroom, don’t expect a bathtub but a shower. It has a dispenser for the shampoo and body wash which is cool since I don’t see that often in the hotels
in Manila.

By morning, we had our buffet breakfast at the topmost floor. Most of the food served is vegetarian with no specific cuisine, I may say. There is nothing special on the top floor, just a view of the city.

For a frugal traveler like me, a 3-star hotel is good enough to have a good room after exploring the city. I like that it is very near the shopping area and the WiFi works well, too!

Yong Kang Beef Noodles, Taipei

It’s not everyday in your life that you will wake up in a different city with a different culture. Comes to that is also the food that the country has to offer for foreigners who visit their place and we were no exemption.

Upon research with my dear friends, one of the recommended restaurants in Taipei is the Yong Kang Beef Noodles. They said that follow where the crowd is. Well, that advice may not always be true but with food, I may say that it is right. From afar, we already saw umbrellas lined up like wet mushroom and yes, that’s where the restaurant is located. We’re accommodated by them right away since people just go there to eat and leave.

I ordered the Spicy Beef Noodles with Soybean Sauce while my friends ordered the one with the cattle tendons. It was a fire in my mouth but hell delectable. The cold and rainy weather made it even more pleasing. The Australian beef is very tender and the noodles are just fine. It was brothy with a hint of star anise and worth a yummy hum in our table.

We also ordered the steamed hog large intestines as our appetizer. The flavor is also good.

Funny thing that I asked for water and the attendant is talking to me in Chinese and I was dumbfounded. I only understood by her gesture and tone of her voice that this is a self-service restaurant and that the water is at the corner that she pointed out. Okay!

Yong Kang Beef Noodles is a two-story restaurant which can accommodate a lot of diners. The place is simple, and a little old because it’s been operating since 1963. The tables are very close to one another and because of the crowd, the table is well-moderated. If you come in solo or pair, you will be most likely be seated with other diners. The price is reasonable and the serving is generous. The service is fast, but I think the attendant just gave me a cold shoulder. The counter was nice, though. The taste is nice but I think that the spiciness of the soup is not tolerable for people who do not eat much spicy food. It was just a good thing that I get accustomed to eating Korean food.
